The British University in Egypt Hosts Landmark Roundtable on Public Service Media
The Faculty of Communication and Mass Media at The British University in Egypt (BUE) hosted a pivotal roundtable on 14 July 2025 under the title: “Advancing Public Service Values in National Media Strategies: A Dialogue Between Academics and Policymakers.” This first-of-its-kind initiative brought together leading voices from academia, media governance, and public service to critically examine the evolving role of national media in society.
The iniative was inaugurated with a faculty orientation tour showcasing the Faculty’s cutting-edge radio and television studios. His Excellency Mr Ahmed Elmoslemany, Chairman of the National Media Authority, expressed admiration for the Faculty’s advanced infrastructure and its role in shaping competent, forward-thinking media professionals.
This event is the first in a new initiative, “Public Dialogue: Media & Society.” This platform will host quarterly policy dialogues exploring key issues at the intersection of media and public life. It is part of our broader mission to serve as a national hub for informed, evidence-based engagement on the role of media in Egypt’s development.
In his welcome address, Professor Mohamed Loutfi, President and Vice-Chancellor of The British University in Egypt, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to societal impact through academic excellence and national collaboration. He highlighted the shared objectives between education and public media in strengthening community trust, transparency, and civic engagement.
Professor Wadouda Badran, Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Social Science Cluster, reinforced the interdisciplinary role of the social sciences in shaping an informed and responsive media sector. She underscored the integration of disciplines across curricula to produce well-rounded graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to national development.
Professor Adel Saleh, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Mass Media, delivered a thematic presentation titled “Public Service Media: Values and Policies.” He underscored the Faculty’s strategic vision in bridging knowledge systems, government institutions, and civil society through media education and policy discourse. He emphasised the importance of decentralisation, education, and public service broadcasting as pillars of democratic progress.
Delivering the keynote, Mr Elmoslemany presented the National Media Authority’s 2030 reform strategy, centred on the “golden square” of Egypt’s soft power: its Arab, Islamic, Christian, and ancient civilisational heritage. His address detailed reforms across broadcasting, digital expansion, and international outreach, including the revival of archival audio assets, global broadcasting.
initiatives, and the launch of “Maspero Plus,” a digital platform aimed at modernising public media services.
A moderated roundtable discussion followed, led by Professor Amany Massod of Cairo University, where participants debated structural reforms, editorial independence, and the role of public media in societal resilience and democratic development.
In his concluding remarks, Professor Hassan Emad, Chairman of the Media Sector Committee at the Supreme Council of Universities, presented a summary of policy recommendations emerging from the dialogue. These included the institutionalisation of academic-media collaboration and sustainable models for independent public broadcasting.
The event concluded with a formal recognition ceremony, where Professor Loutfi and Professor Saleh presented an honorary shield to Mr Elmoslemany, acknowledging his leadership in steering national media toward professionalism, independence, and public service.
This roundtable marks a foundational step in what will become an ongoing collaboration between BUE and the National Media Authority aimed at cultivating a new generation of media professionals committed to public values and national progress. The Faculty of Communication and Mass Media remains at the forefront of this mission, continuously integrating academic inquiry with national relevance.
