Prof. Dr. Abdel Gawad Hashem Discusses Seasonal Respiratory Illnesses and COVID-19 Dynamics
Dr. Abdel Gawad Hashem, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, recently provided expert analysis on the rise of seasonal respiratory illnesses in an interview on CTV Egypt's "In the Light" program. Dr. Hashem clarified the distinction between the common cold (Rhinovirus and current, less-virulent Coronavirus variants) and the more severe Influenza, emphasizing that the latter is characterized by high fever (above 38.5°C) and severe body aches. He stressed that developing a strong immune system through healthy nutrition, particularly consuming Vitamin C-rich foods like lemons and oranges, is the primary defense against these viruses. Critically, Dr. Hashem warned against the misuse of antibiotics for viral infections, as they are ineffective against viruses and contribute to drug resistance. He concluded by recommending the seasonal flu vaccine for high-risk individuals, such as the elderly and those with chronic diseases.
