BUE Nursing Students Lead Mother Classes in Pediatric Hospitals to Promote Child Health
Empowering Families Through Student-Led Health Education and Clinical Engagement
As part of their pediatric nursing clinical placements this semester, Third-year students from the Faculty of Nursing at The British University in Egypt (BUE) have taken an active role in promoting maternal and child health. Under the supervision of Associate Professor Marwa Abouheiba, Head of the Pediatric Nursing Department, Associate Professor Sara Sayed, the Pediatric Nursing Department, and led by the pediatric nursing department staff and teaching assistants, students participated in a community-based initiative to deliver Mother Classes across two major pediatric hospitals in Cairo.
These health education activities, designed to bridge the gap between clinical practice and community engagement, aimed to raise awareness among mothers and caregivers while enhancing the students’ communication, education, and clinical teaching skills.
Mother Class at Abu El-Reesh Hospital: Focus on Pneumonia
A group of students conducted a structured health education session at Abu El-Reesh Hospital, where the Mother Class focused on pneumonia, a highly prevalent condition among pediatric patients. The session covered essential topics including: Early warning signs and symptoms, Prevention methods, Home care management, and When to seek medical help.
Mother Classes at Al-Mataria Teaching Hospital: Comprehensive Health Topics
Another student group facilitated FOUR different Mother Classes at Al-Mataria Teaching Hospital, addressing critical areas that directly impact children’s health and well-being:
-
The Importance of Immunizations and Key Considerations
-
Warning Signs That Require Seeking Hospitalization
Educating the mothers about warning signs and symptoms when they appear in their children, they should immediately seek medical intervention, and never delay seeking medical help. -
Nutrition, Healthy diet, Feeding, and the Weaning process for infants.
-
Personal Hygiene for Children and Its Role in Preventive Health
These sessions were carefully planned to align with the most common health concerns in the pediatric population. Students also distributed informative brochures tailored to each topic and provided small gifts to children, helping create a friendly and engaging environment for both mothers and young patients.
This initiative reflects BUE’s commitment to experiential learning, community outreach, and the holistic development of its nursing students. Through these activities, students not only gained hands-on experience but also contributed meaningfully to public health promotion, helping to raise awareness and educate families on preventive care and healthy practices.
Such clinical activities strengthen the student–community–hospital connection, cultivating both competence and compassion in the next generation of Egyptian nurses.
