Study Skills Advisor - Academic Enhancement (Office of the Provost)
Job Purpose
The Study Skills Advisor leads, develops, manages and delivers an evidence-based programme of study skills provision aimed at supporting undergraduate students to maximise their effectiveness as learners and engage positively with all academic elements of their programme of learning.
The role supports a university-wide ambition to optimize learning in innovative and student-centred ways, increase student engagement, reduce student attrition and increase overall student satisfaction.
Job Responsibilities
- Adopt a student-centred approach to supporting undergraduate students to maximise their learning potential and the value of their learning across the arc of their degree course.
- Work with the Head of Academic Enhancement and Vice Deans of Teaching and Learning to align the study skills programme to student needs as demonstrated by course reviews, student-reported metrics and Staff Student Liaison Committee outcomes
- Design and implement a study skills programme for undergraduate students delivered across the academic year. This might involve (but is not limited to) workshops in academic writing, reading and note-taking, time management, project management, exam preparation and technique, research dissertation planning, the safe and responsible use of AI and other related skills.
- Design and implement relevant study programmes in key areas such as critical thinking, citizenship in the Egyptian context and employability.
- Deliver bespoke workshops, seminars and talks, both internally and externally, on a range of subjects related to study skills in the higher education context.
- Assist students in understanding wider University policies and processes, academic standards and integrity.
- Educate students on professionalism and professional behavior including how to engage and interact with university staff.
- Work to develop a ‘study skills’ section on the University's virtual learning environment, and social media space, providing guidance to current students and prospective students
- Support students needing additional study skills support during their degree studies, included targeted support for students who have encountered particular academic challenges.
- Collaborate with Academic English Cluster Leads to ensure that the student skills programme works to underpin Academic and Professional English language acquisition.
- Ensure close working links with the Student Journey colleagues, ensuring referrals to relevant colleagues in functions such as student support and wellbeing and career centre.
- Produce written reports and presentations, as required, on numbers using the service outlying a general overview of the types of challenges which students are presenting with and any relevant recommendations.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by the line manager.
Job Requirements
Educational Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in any academic field
- Post graduate qualification in education, development, instructional design, training design, education, coaching or similar.
Experience
- Minimum of three years relevant work experience.
- Experience in the delivery of high quality higher education, perhaps as a teaching assistant, lecturer or study skills advisor
- Experience of pedagogy and contemporary approaches to teaching and learning
- Experience in the design and delivery of workshops, trainings, etc.
- Experience in monitoring and evaluation
- (utilization of data in measuring and improving student experience/ student support services).
- Experience of specialist student support in a higher education setting.
Technical Skills
- Ability to design and deliver workshops and trainings to students
- Ability to coach and guide students in their academic journey
- Ability to set measures for assessment and evaluation of services
- Ability to produce accurate and succinct written reports.
- Knowledge of inclusive teaching practices and the delivery of high quality student support
- Capacity to use IT systems to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery.
- Ability to work independently, manage own caseload and use initiative.
- Ability to proactively build relationships with students, placing an emphasis on their needs.
