Industrial Fabrication, Communication and Outreach Lab Engineer- Enterprise Department
Job Purpose
The Industrial Fabrication / Communication and Outreach Lab Engineer is responsible for supervising and managing the operations of the Fabrication Lab, ensuring the effective use of technologies such as laser cutting, 3D printing, and PCB/board-making equipment. Acting as a central resource for startups, students, and Startup Incubation Program (SIP) staff, the role provides technical services and guidance to support prototype development, sample production, and creative projects.
In addition, the Engineer plays a key role in communication and outreach, promoting the lab’s services, showcasing success stories, and engaging with the wider community through initiatives, events, and partnerships. The role also supports academic exploration and experiential learning related to materials, design, and fabrication processes.
Job Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of the Fabrication Lab and handle equipment requests.
- Maintain a well-organized, safe, and efficient working environment.
- Ensure that safety protocols are clearly communicated and followed by all lab users.
- Source, and manage necessary materials, supplies, and consumables for fabrication projects.
- Troubleshoot, service, and maintain fabrication equipment (e.g., laser cutters, 3D printers, board-making machines) to ensure continuous functionality.
- Provide technical guidance and hands-on support to students, startups, and research projects.
- Support academic and entrepreneurial exploration in materials, design, and fabrication processes.
- Showcase success stories, projects, and innovations through communication initiatives.
- Contribute to generating revenue for the Enterprise by offering lab services, prototypes, and custom fabrication solutions.
- Create and maintain detailed records of client usage, equipment logs, and project documentation.
- Provide reports and feedback on lab utilization, equipment status, and service performance.
- Undertake various duties as assigned by Dean/Head of Department, Programme Director.
Job Requirements
Educational Qualifications
Desired:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
Experience
Desired:
- 1–2 years of experience in fabrication, prototyping, or lab/technical workshop management.
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of materials, design, and fabrication processes.
- Hands-on experience with fabrication technologies (e.g., laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC, PCB/board making).
- Knowledge of workplace safety standards and procedures.
- Experience of (AutoCAD - Rhinoceros 3D, CAD/CAM Software, Laser Cutter, Milling Machine, 3D printers, etc.)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Craftsmanship Experience and Knowledge.
- Experience in dealing with international foreign staff and working within a multicultural environment.
- Working coherently under pressure and meeting strict deadlines.
- Writing marketing content and design posts through Canva or photoshop.
