Lab Chemist- Faculty of Pharmacy
Job Purpose
The Laboratory Chemist is responsible for preparing chemical reagents, glassware, and laboratory instruments for practical tutorials across various modules. The role also ensures that laboratory activities comply with safety regulations and operational standards to support effective teaching and learning.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist students in conducting qualitative and quantitative experiments on chemical substances to ensure quality control or develop new products or knowledge.
- Assist students in performing a variety of tests and use different techniques to conduct experiments on organic and inorganic compounds.
- Prepare chemical reagents, instruments, glassware, and samples required for laboratory tutorials in different specialties.
- Ensure the availability, suitability, and proper labeling of prepared chemicals and equipment for each lab.
- Monitor the proper functioning and cleanliness of lab instruments and tools, reporting any issues or malfunctions to the line manager or module leader.
- Maintain laboratory inventory by requesting and receiving chemicals, tools, and supplies from the central chemical store.
- Supervise the daily setup and closure of labs, ensuring compliance with safety and hygiene protocols.
- Ensure that all electricity, gas, and water sources are safely shut off at the end of the day.
- Handle and oversee the safe disposal of laboratory waste and expired chemicals according to environmental and safety regulations.
- Implement and enforce laboratory safety measures and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by all users.
- Support module leaders and academic staff during practical sessions when needed.
- Undertake various duties as assigned by line manager.
Job Requirements
Educational Qualifications
Desired:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline.
Experience
Desired:
- 2+ year of experience in a laboratory environment, preferably in an academic or healthcare institution.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in the preparation and handling of chemical reagents.
- Knowledge of standard laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Familiarity with chemical storage, labeling, and safety data sheets (SDS).
- Awareness of laboratory safety protocols and waste disposal procedures.
