English Language Instructor

Job purpose

English Language Instructors are responsible for designing, developing and delivering teaching materials, as directed, in line with the agreed module specifications and scheme of work. Lessons are expected to be engaging and positive and support effective learning. English Language Instructors are also required to administer English language assessments and complete associated administrative tasks.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Learning

The post holder will:

· Prepare teaching material in line with agreed module specifications and schemes of work, as directed.

· Deliver classes as scheduled, ensuring classes are engaging, effective and student-centred.

· Run tutorials to provide additional support, as required.

· Fulfil all required administrative tasks such as completing registers, e-learning uploads etc.

· Develop positive, professional relationships with their students and colleagues.

Assessment and Marking

· Communicate clear and accurate information to all students so they are aware of the nature and timing of assessments, in a timely fashion.

· Administer assessments, ensuring they are delivered securely.

· Mark assessments and enter grades accurately and within agreed timeframes.

· Participate in standardisation meetings.

· Provide formative feedback/ feed-forward to students, as appropriate, focusing on constructive comments.

· Identify cases of academic misconduct and escalate these according to agreed university rules and regulations.

Quality Assurance

· Complete module evaluation reports or surveys, as requested.

· Reflect on student evaluations, identify areas of teaching practice which have been highlighted, and proactively implement improvements.

Professional Learning

· Engage in professional learning as required to support teaching activities and continually update knowledge.

· Implement ideas identified through professional learning activities, reflecting on their effectiveness.

· Show an on-going commitment to their own professional development.

Other

· Participate in performance evaluation tasks.

· Invigilate exams as needed across the university.

· Attend and contribute to departmental and faculty meetings.

· Cover classes, as required.

EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

· First degree in a relevant field

Desirable

· Master’s degree (or working towards) in a relevant field eg. English language teaching, TESOL. Applied linguistics.

· Professional qualification eg. CELTA, DELTA

EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL QUALITIES

Essential:

· At least two years full-time experience teaching English for Academic Purposes in a HEI, utilising student-centred teaching methodologies.

· Advanced oral and written communication skills, preferably equivalent to IELTS band 8

· Able to effectively manage workloads to ensure deadlines are consistently met.

· Positively attitude, with a track record of collegiality and commitment to students

· Flexibility and a willingness to help out when needed.

· A tendency to seek solutions to problems.

· A commitment to the values and behaviours of the British University in Egypt

Desirable

· Experience teaching English for Academic Purposes within a relevant subject area

· An ability to integrate material relevant to the students’ degrees, into the English sessions.

· A track-record of published research and/or conference presentations

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential

· An appropriate level of digital capability to complete required tasks, including confidence in using MS Office, e-learning platforms, data projectors and educational apps.

· Knowledge of higher education and the ability to use a range of delivery techniques to motivate and engage students.

Desirable

· Successful experience in teaching academic English online and/or in a blended format.
