  • Dr. Islam Al-Akraa received his Bachelor degree in Science in 2007 from the faculty of Science at Cairo university. Directly after graduation, he worked for American Water Chemicals Incorporation as a technical support Engineer then he promoted to represent Egypt technical office until August 2009. On September 2009, Dr. Al-Akraa joined the Faculty of Engineering at the British University in Egypt (BUE). He was awarded the MSc and PhD degrees from Cairo University at 2011 and 2015, respectively. The degrees focused on assembling of nanostructures-modified catalysts for fuel cell, water electrolysis and electrosensing applications. In 2016, Dr. Al-Akraa was awarded the George Forster postdoctoral research fellowship from Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) foundation that was hosted by the Ruhr University in Bochum (RUB), Germany and at 2019 he became a Fulbright alumnus after participating in the JFDP program at the University of Texas at Austin (Ut Austin). Currently, Dr. Al-Akraa has an Associate Professor title from the Egyptian universities supreme council and promoted to that degree at the BUE. Dr. Al-Akraa is a first author and a co-author for several peer-reviewed articles. In addition, he had awards from BUE, DAAD, European commission, TU Dresden, International association for Hydrogen Energy. He is also a reviewer and editorial board member for many related international journals.

Research Interests

My research interests center around several different areas involving energy, water and environment. These topics currently focus on:

  • Liquid fuel cells (LFCs): a green technology utilizes the oxidation of small organic compounds as formic acid, methanol and ethylene glycol together with the oxygen reduction to produce electricity.
  • Water electrolysis: The best technology to produce hydrogen, as a green fuel, with high purity along with production of oxygen.
  • Biodiesel production: Biodiesel is a green alternative for petrodiesel. It could be extracted from vegetable oils or animal fats with very low emissions. Biodiesel can be utilized alone, or blended with petrodiesel in the normal diesel engine.
  • Nanoparticles and multilayers assembly: With the layer-by-layer (LBL) technique, multilayers (of different thicknesses) of several nanoparticles were successfully fabricated and participated successfully on catalyzing several important electrochemical applications
  • Water treatment: this includes the preparation of novel adsorbents for industrial wastewater treatment.
