Prof. El-Mahdy started her professional career as a structural engineer at Arab Consulting Engineers (Moharram-Bakhoum). In 1990 she went to Canada to study at the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario. In 1997 she returned to Egypt and worked as a senior structural engineer in Arab Consulting Engineers until she was appointed as a Researcher at the Housing and Building National Research Center (HBRC) in the Structures and Metallic Construction Research Institute in 2002. In 2003 she joined the United Nations, Department of Peace Keeping Operations in New York where she served as a Chief of Unit in the Engineering Section for a year. She then went to Alberta, Canada where she worked as a structural engineer in the Alberta oil and gas industry earning her license as a professional engineer in Alberta in 2006. In 2006 she also served as an engineer in the UNOPS-UNICEF schools reconstruction project in Aceh and Nias, in Banda Aceh, Indonesia for the victims of 2004 Tsunami. She returned to Egypt in 2009 where she was promoted at HBRC to Associate Research Professor and in 2014 to Research Professor. At HBRC she served as a member of the code committee for the Egyptian Code of Practice for the Planning, Design, and Construction of Bridges and Elevated Intersections – Part 6 (Steel Bridges), and an associate editor for the HBRC journal, as well as the editor for the Design Aids for Steel Structures (Allowable Stress Design). She started teaching part-time at the Higher Technological Institute (HTI) in 2010 and joined the BUE as a part-time professor in 2015. She was appointed as a full-time professor at BUE in 2018.

Education

Prof. Ghada El-Mahdy graduated from Ain Shams University in 1988 with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering (with Honours). She received her M.A.Sc. in Civil Engineering in 1992 and her Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering (Structural Stability) in 1997 from the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario in Canada.
