So much for the philosophy – what about the practice? Of course we recognise that graduates need to have a basic knowledge and understanding of their subject when they leave us. But we also aim to send our graduates out into the world with a wider skill set that will be attractive to employers and give BUE alumni a competitive edge in the job market. Every one of our programmes has a clearly defined set of outcomes – knowledge, understanding or skills - that students are expected to achieve. The outcomes are grouped into four categories:
 Knowledge and understanding: the basic bedrock of the subject material;
Subject-specific cognitive skills: these enable students to apply their knowledge, analyse and evaluate data, construct a logical and critical argument, solve problems;
Subject-specific practical skills: these enable students to design a system, manage a project, use equipment safely and correctly, use management and modelling techniques;
Key or transferable skills: these are general skills that a student learns during his or her time at BUE that can be applied or transferred to pretty much any work or life situation – time management, presentation, report writing, information retrieval, communication, IT and self-development.
Equipped with these skills, BUE graduates will be confident young people, who will bring qualities to the workplace that are highly valued by employers:
The ability to think creatively and with strong problem-solving skills;
The ability to maintain, on their own initiative, a high level of professional and subject-specific competence – they will know they constantly need to update their skills, and they will know how to do it;
Technical competence;
The ability to conceptualise problems at a high level – they will be able to see the big picture from a long-term perspective, and plan for the future, not simply respond to immediate issues as they arise;
The ability to work equally well alone or as a member of a team;
Flexibility and the ability to apply their subject-specific knowledge to fields outside their own.

The BUE’s approach to quality is the same as that of any British university in the UK.
