Student Attendance Policy
Institutional Policy on Student Attendance at Classes
You are expected to attend every formally scheduled learning session: lecture, tutorial, workshop or lab. We know from experience that students who do not attend classes produce poor work, and are more likely to get a low mark or to fail a module. So if you do not attend, you are less likely to pass the year and be allowed to progress to your next year of study. You are also more likely to have to take re-sit examinations.
What will happen if you do not attend classes
Your personal tutor will call you in to meet with him or her to discuss your attendance. Together you will explore the reasons why you have been absent. Your tutor will consider with you what you can do to improve your situation, especially if you have already missed a lot of work. The options include:
• Helping you to find a way to make up the work you have missed;
• Helping you to improve your attendance in future, for example by arranging for tuition in study skills such as time management and motivation;
• Helping you if you find a very difficult, for example by arranging for extra tuition;
• Withdrawing from the module;
• Suspending your studies for a period of time;
• Transferring to a different programme or faculty;
• Transferring to another university.

Will I be punished if I don’t attend classes? The main punishment is the one you impose on yourself: by not attending classes you make it very difficult to succeed in your studies. Some faculties and programmes make attendance compulsory, and will expect a 70% or 75% attendance rate to pass their modules.

Faculty Attendance Policies
Faculty of Engineering
Engineering Prep, 1st, and 2nd year students must attend 75% or more of the classes of any registered module in order to be eligible to sit for the final examination of such a module.

Faculty of Business Administration, Economics & Political Science
Attendance at all classes (both lectures and tutorials) is compulsory. Any student missing three classes will not be permitted to take the final exam. Any student missing a class will be written to by the Dean, warning him/her of the consequences of missing three classes or more.

Faculty of Nursing
70% attendance is required in all courses in the four years.

English Department:
Students must attend 75% or more of the classes of any English module in order to be eligible to sit for the final examination /or submit the final paper as relevant to such module.
