Sir David Blatherwick


  • Bio: David Blatherwick was educated at Lincoln School and Wadham College, Oxford, where he read Classics. He joined the Foreign Office in 1964 and spent most of his career dealing with Ireland and the Middle East, in London and abroad. After heading the FCO’s Energy and Science Department (1982-5) he served as Political Counsellor at the Mission to the UN in New York (1986-9) and was responsible for finance, control and corporate planning in the FCO (1989-91). He was Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland from 1991 to 1995. He served twice in Cairo, first from 1977 to 1980 and subsequently as Ambassador from 1995 until his retirement in 1999. He was a Board member of the Middle East Association from 2000 to 2006 (Chairman 2004-5) and Joint Chair, Anglo-Irish Encounter from 2002 to 2008. He has been a Trustee of the British University in Egypt since 2006 and Chairman of the Egyptian British Chamber of Commerce since 2000.
