Research Awards


This document contains the regulations and procedure to follow for recognition of BUE Academic Staff, Teaching Assistants and Graduating Students for their research achievements through monetary rewards. This recognition has been approved by the University Board to energize the research culture at BUE and incentivize senior and junior academic staff, and students to excel in research and innovation, publish in international journals, and compete for external funding. The following details general rules and award types and their regulations.

General Rules

  1. Six Research Awards are offered to Academic Staff, Teaching Assistants, Graduate Students and Undergraduate students.
  2. Qualified BUE staff can apply for a single research award per application cycle.
  3. Qualified BUE staff selected for a research award can reapply for the same award after a certain period of time has elapsed from the year of the previous award as specified in the regulations for each award.
  4. Research output which received a BUE research award will be excluded from future applications for awards.
  5. Scopus database is used in benchmarking research output submitted for an award in Science and Engineering.
  6. Scopus and/or Thomson Reuters is used in benchmarking research output submitted for an award in Social Science.
  7. A limited number of papers submitted to international conferences may be considered as indicated in the rules of each award provided that the conference (a) is organised by an international academic/professional society/organisation/university, (b) includes at least ten international presenters, (c) has at least ten international members of the scientific committee and/or reviewers, and (d) has printed or electronic proceedings showing full papers of the conference.
  8. For Papers with multiple co-authors, the following will apply:
    1. In principle, papers accepted for submission to an award must have no more than five co-authors, otherwise it will be subject to the regulation in 8b.
    2. Papers with more than five co-authors may be considered for an award if it is a result of research work under a formal collaboration and/or agreement involving large research teams.Papers co-authored by 6 to 12 are given half credit (two papers of this kind are considered as one full paper).

      2. Papers co-authored by more than 12 are given quarter of a credit (four papers of this kind are considered as one full paper), regardless of the number of co-authors.
  9. Academic honesty will be examined for the work presented for all research awards.

Research Award Types

1. Principal Researcher Award Download RAW1 Form

1.1 Open for Professors and Associate Professors employed at BUE full time for a minimum of three full academic years (October-August).

1.2 Award is not open for Academic Staff serving in key university administration posts (President, Vice Presidents, Deans) at the time of call for applications.

1.3 Four awards are offered in the following categories:
     
      - Two in Engineering, Basic Science, and Computer Science     

      - One in Arts & Humanities, and Social Science 
   
      - One in Health Science

1.4 Each has a monetary reward of 30,000 EGP and a Certificate.

1.5 Applicants submit their collective research and academic output during a period of time not exceeding five full calendar years (January-December), which immediately precede the time of application including publications (papers, books, book chapters), research grants awarded, proposals submitted, patents, thesis supervision, conferences, recognition, community consultancy, service on scientific committees, editorial boards, review panels, scientific societies, etc., and any other intellectual activities.

1.6 Applicants qualify to be considered for the award if their submission includes a minimum of eight papers, of which at least four are journal papers and three are showing BUE affiliation. Conference papers must have at least two appearing in proceedings of an international conference.

1.7 Applicants qualify for the award if they pass a threshold of an aggregate parameter, which accounts for quality of the submitted work, and the award is granted to the applicant with the highest aggregate parameter.

1.8 Winners of this award can re-apply for the same award after three full calendar years have elapsed from the date of the last award.

2. Early Research Career Award Download RAW2 Form

2.1 Open for Associate Professors and Lecturers employed at BUE full time for a minimum of two full academic years.

2.2 Award is not open for Associate Professors serving as Acting Dean at the time of call for applications.

2.3 Four awards are offered in the following categories:

      - Two in Engineering, Basic Science, and Computer Science

      - One in Arts & Humanities, and Social Science

      - One in Health Science

2.4 Each has a monetary reward of 23,000 EGP and a Certificate.

2.5 Applicants submit their collective research and academic output during a period of time not exceeding five full calendar years, which immediately precede the time of application including publications (papers, books, book chapters), research grants awarded, proposals submitted, patents, thesis supervision, conferences, recognition, community consultancy, service on scientific committees, editorial boards, review panels, scientific societies, etc., and any other intellectual activities.

2.6 Applicants qualify to be considered for the award if their submission includes a minimum of six papers, of which at least three are journal papers and two are showing BUE affiliation. Conference papers must have at least one appearing in proceedings of an international conference.

2.7 Applicants qualify for the award if they pass a threshold of an aggregate parameter, which accounts for quality of the submitted work, and the award is granted to the applicant with the highest aggregate parameter.

2.8 Winners of this award can re-apply for the same award after three full calendar years have elapsed from the date of the last award.

3. High-Impact Researcher Award Download RAW3 Form

3.1 Open for Academic Staff of all ranks employed at BUE full time for a minimum of one full academic year.

3.2 Four awards are offered in the following categories:

      - Two in Engineering, Basic Science, and Computer Science

      - One in Arts & Humanities, and Social Science

      - One in Health Science

3.3 Each has a monetary reward of 17,000 EGP and a Certificate.

3.4 Applicants submit the papers, which they authored or co-authored and appeared in peer-reviewed journals and/or conferences during a period of time not exceeding three full calendar years, which immediately precede the time of application.

3.5 Applicants qualify to be considered for the award if their submission includes a minimum of four papers, of which at least three are journal papers showing BUE affiliation, and the conference paper must have appeared in proceedings of an international conference.

3.6 Applicants qualify for the award if they pass a threshold of an aggregate parameter, which accounts for h-index, number of citations and impact factor of the presented papers, and the award is granted to the applicant with the highest aggregate parameter.

3.7 Winners of this award can re-apply for the same award after two full calendar years have elapsed from the date of the last award.

4. Best Publication Award Download RAW4 Form

4.1 Open for Academic Staff of all ranks employed at BUE full time for a minimum of one full academic year.

4.2 Eight awards are offered in the following categories:

     - Four in Engineering, Basic Science, and Computer Science

     - Two in Arts & Humanities, and Social Science

     - Two in Health Science

4.3 Each has a monetary reward of 14,000 EGP and a Certificate.

4.4 Applicants submit a single paper, which they authored or co-authored and appeared in a peer-reviewed journal and showing BUE affiliation during a period of time not exceeding two full calendar years, which immediately precede the time of application.

4.5 If the paper submitted for the award is co-authored by BUE academic staff, all qualified co-authors are considered applicants and the paper is submitted by one co-author on behalf of all others. If the paper is selected for the award, all qualified co-authors will be recognized as winners and will share the monetary reward.

4.6 Applicants qualify for the award if the paper submitted has a minimum of one citation, excluding own citations. The award is granted to the applicant whose paper has the highest journal impact factor.

4.7 Winners of this award can re-apply for the same award after two full calendar years have elapsed from the date of the last award.

5. Best Postgraduate Thesis Award Download RAW5 Form

5.1 Open for Demonstrators who completed a Master Degree, and Assistant Lecturers who completed a PhD Degree, at BUE or at any other university.

5.2 Eight awards are offered in the following categories:

      - Four in Engineering, Basic Science, and Computer Science

      - Two in Arts & Humanities, and Social Science

      - Two in Health Science

5.3 Each has a monetary reward of 10,000 EGP and a Certificate.

5.4 Applicants qualify for the award if they complete the postgraduate degree within the time specified in BUE policies, and published at least one paper describing their research in a peer-reviewed journal and showing BUE affiliation.

5.5 The award is granted to the applicant authoring the paper, which appear in the journal with the highest impact factor.

5.6 Applications for this award are considered only if the postgraduate degree is awarded within the academic year immediately preceding the call for applications.

5.7    Winners of this award for a Master thesis can re-apply for the same award for PhD thesis.

6. Best Research/Design Graduation Project Award

6.1 Open for graduating students.

6.2 Seventeen awards are offered in the following categories:

      - Seven in Engineering

      - Four in Computer Science

      - Three in Arts & Humanities, and Social Science

      - Three in Health Science

6.3 Only research/dissertation projects are considered if they exist in the faculties offering the above disciplines/categories, otherwise design projects, or generally special work required for graduation, is considered.

6.4 Each has a monetary reward of 6,000 EGP and a Certificate.

6.5 Winners are selected by a panel formed by the Deans of the Faculties relevant to the award category based on a combination of new results, high societal impact, high potential for commercialisation, and appearance in peer-reviewed journals.
