Pharmacy Programme Structure
- The 5-year programme is offered in 10 consecutive semesters during 5 years. Module provision involves lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical periods as well as field training. Each semester involves 55-60 credits (equivalent to 16.5-18 credit hours), thus making up a total of 580 credits for the entire programme This is equivalent to 174 credit hours).
- General Non-Core Modules (10.3%): These subjects are given, mostly, to the first-year students and include: Mathematics, English Language, Communication Skills, Psychology and Scientific Thinking. These are especially tailored to meet the needs of pharmacy students and will be coordinated by most relevant pharmaceutical departments, as deems appropriate.
- Core Modules: constitute about 80.2% of the whole provision. They are sequenced and synchronized to permit optimal learning and transition among semesters. Prerequisites are also applied to maximize the benefits gained from these courses.
- Optional or Elective Modules: are provided in the last 4 semesters of the study and comprise 4.3% of the total provisions. A variety of such courses is offered by different departments and covers a broad-range of knowledge. Electives are offered in groups of interest; the choice among which will be linked with the nature of the research project students perform in the final year of the study. This strategy will also enable students to choose the subjects that best match their current and future needs and interests. A list of elective programmes is given at the end of course-description. This grouping can likewise serve as the basis of offering future topics for Masters’ programme or Diplomas.
- Senior Research projects (5.2%): Besides, in its last year of study, the programme encompasses a research project which constitutes a research dissertation work on recent development in pharmaceutical sciences. This course aims to boost the students’ ability to conduct research and surf the literature arena, and also to apply the knowledge they gained in informatics and electives.
- A 300 hrs of summer training programme is enforced throughout the study, particularly after the third and fourth years, so as to ensure timely optimal gain of professional experience. This training will also take place in community and hospital pharmacy stores and in pharmaceutical firms and will be considered a partial requirement of graduation.
- During the ninth semester of the study, placement (externship) in hospitals is an essential requirement of this programme will take place.

ENGLxxxxxx: English Language 1
This module is offered to the newly-admitted students to reinforce their study skills, with a special emphasis on oral presentations as in seminars, composition as in written exams and extraction of information from reference books and electronic resources. Besides, students will get a flavour of scientific-terms commonly used in learning and practice.
The aims of this module are to:
• Ensure that all students have a basic knowledge and understanding of elementary mathematics and also provide basic cognitive and practical skills for future study.
• Develop the students’ understanding of mathematics and processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment.
• Possess a broad foundational knowledge of mathematics, relevant to pharmacology that will serve as a strong platform for future study.
• Expand their range of mathematical skills and techniques and use them in simple unstructured problems.
• Read and comprehend mathematical arguments and articles concerning applications of mathematics especially with respect to pharmacology problems.
• Take increasing responsibility for their own learning and the evaluation of their own mathematical development.

PCMS01P01: Physical Chemistry
The aims of this module are to build up knowledge and skills in basic physical chemistry and understand the concepts of some topics such as: Stoichiometry, gases, solutions and thermochemistry. Also, ensure that students acquire the knowledge of basic physical chemistry necessary for understanding further chemistry courses.
PCMS02P01: Organic Chemistry-1
The aim of this course is to give the student detailed knowledge and demonstrate professional competence in application of principles of aliphatic and aromatic organic chemistry.
PPIP01P01: Orientation & History of Pharmacy
The module aims to provide the students with knowledge, skills and information about practice the pharmacy profession in various discipline including community pharmacies, hospitals, clinical pharmacist, industrial plants. In addition to give a chance for students to identify the basic knowledge of different dosage forms and prescription types. Also, the course is intended for the students to acquire widespread information about ancient civilization in the field of pharmacy, Arab scientists, development of the profession, different papyrus used in registration of drugs of different origin and uses.

The aims of this module are to ensure that students continue to acquire basic knowledge in organic chemistry in addition to that taught in organic chemistry 1 knowledge. The module also aims to give the student detailed knowledge and demonstrate professional competence in principles and applications of spectroscopy, principles of stereochemistry and principles of heterocyclic chemistry in order to prepare the student to medicinal chemistry, phytochemistry and biochemistry.

The aims of this module are to:
- Provide the students with a quantitative sense in chemical analysis.
- Provide the students with a deep knowledge of volumetric method of analysis.
- Provide knowledge of different reactions in titrations like acid base titrations, precipitate formation titrations, complex formation titrations, and redox titrations.
The aim(s) of this module are to
- Give the students a comprehensive knowledge of the concept of pharmaceutics, different routes of drug administration and basic pharmaceutical calculations.
- Understand the basic principles of solutions (aqueous & non aqueous) and disperse systems (i.e. colloids, suspensions & emulsions) and their properties.
- Understand the processes involve in the development of liquid dosage forms.
- Know the incompatibilities occurring during dispensing and extemporaneous compounding are also considered.

The aim of this module is to make students aware of the fundamental physiological functions of the different systems in the human body. Build on the anatomical/structural concepts learnt previously in order to study the functions of the various body systems/organs/tissues/cells depending on the topic, in order to maintain homeostasis. In addition to study the effects of some drugs on the body based on the physiological concepts learnt, and learn about some abnormalities of homeostasis. The aims of this module are to demonstrate the basic concepts and fundamentals of Biochemistry. The course starts with a brief description of cell structure, function of various organelles and transportation across biological membranes. The chemical and biological importance of amino acids & proteins are studied in details. The course also focuses on enzyme action and kinetics. Structures of carbohydrates and lipids are also highlighted in the course. Nucleotides and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) are studied in details with brief emphasis on various processes such as replication, transcription and translation. The course also includes porphyrin structures and function. The laboratory work deals with the study of both chemistry and function of various molecules using biological fluids and secretions such as milk and urine in addition to studying enzymatic activity and kinetics.
PCMS06C01: Instrumental Pharmaceutical Analysis
The aim of this module is to provide students with the bases of the different methods of instrumental analysis and the various separation techniques. Moreover, the course also provides the students with information on QA and QC concerning the analytical procedures and validation data.

The aim(s) of this module is / are to:
Install in students a lasting interest in science and technology; to impart some understanding of the value of scientific thinking and its relation to issues of society; and to foster an appreciation of scientific concepts, the process by which science discovers new knowledge and engineering applies that knowledge to practice, and how such understanding is essential to functioning effectively in modern society.
The aim of this module is/are to:
- Make students aware of the fundamental abnormal body functional changes behind the occurrence of disease states in humans, as a result of the failure of homeostasis.
- Build on the physiological concepts learnt previously in order to study the “sequence of events” or the mechanisms that occur during the dysfunction of some major body systems and build a brief background on the intervention measures used clinically in the management of such functional changes.

Topical & transdermal systems
The module aims to cover the chemistry and biology of natural products; carbohydrates, anthraquinone glycosides, cardiac glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, glucosinolates and cyanogenic glycosides, bitter principles, plant polyphenols, and their applications in therapeutics. This course is designed to deal with different classes of 2ry metabolites. Thus; the course covers different methods of preparation, isolation and identification of these compounds from their natural sources by chemical and chromatographic methods as well as their application in medicine, bioavailability, mechanism of action and side effects. In addition, special emphasis on the biosynthesis of the different classes was also concerned.

The aim of this module is to provide students with basic information about metabolic pathways of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, as well as integration of metabolism during feeding and fasting cycle across various organs of the body. The laboratory work deals with the study of blood parameters, assessment of disorders of plasma proteins, carbohydrates and lipid metabolism and how to interpret the changes in these parameters’ levels related to different human pathologies.
The module aims to cover the chemistry of natural products mainly; alkaloids and essential oils, and their applications in therapeutics. Thus, the course covers different methods of preparation, isolation and identification of these compounds from their natural sources by chemical and chromatographic methods as well as their application in medicine and pharmaceutical industries. In addition, special emphasis on the biosynthesis of the different classes is also concerned.
In the practical students should deepen their knowledge by analyzing the constituents of the most important herbal drugs through chemical and analytical identification as suggested in the Egyptian and European Pharmacopoeia. By the end of the practical course the students should be able to apply important analytical methods for the analysis of phytopharmaceuticals.
PMBT02C01: Basic Microbiology
The aim of this module is to provide students with concise information about the fundamental aspects of Microbiology which include characterization of microorganisms, the microbial classification and taxonomy and the basics of genetics. The students should also acquire skills of microscopical examination and identification of microorganisms and efficient cultivation of bacteria.

The module aims to: provide basic qualitative description of biopharmaceutics of drugs and to understand the fundamental of pharmacokinetics. The major focus in biopharmaceutics will be concentrated on the various in vitro and in vivo factors that can affect drug performance in the body during the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and achievement of response.

Upon the end of this course, the students should be familiar with the biochemical changes associated with carbohydrate, protein, lipids disorders and the mechanisms of specific diseases state. PCMS07I01: Pharmaceutical Chemistry-1
The aim of this module is to highlight the chemistry, nomenclature, synthesis, analysis, and metabolism of various drug categories based on their clinical use including GIT, Antidiabetic, Antibiotics, Antifungal, Antiparasitic, Anticancer & Antiviral drugs. Moreover, introduction to drug metabolism strategies are covered including phase I & phase II metabolic pathways. Students will develop skills that relate the drug chemical structures with its activity and potency, as well as predictions of metabolic fates based on the existing structural determinants. The aim of this module is to provide students with concise information about most medically important infectious diseases related to different groups of microorganisms. Students should also acquire practical skills for investigation of the infectious agent in clinical specimens.
The aims of this module are to:
- Provide students with the main concepts and central mechanisms of the human immune response, basic cellular and molecular aspects of immunology including innate immunity, antibodies, T cells, B cells, complement, antigen presentation and the cytokine network.

The aim of this module is to provide pharmacy students with the basic knowledge on the impact of public health in order to develop the attitude of the students as to health promotion, prevention of diseases and the impact of environment on health. PMBT06I01: Pharmaceutical Microbiology
The aims of this module are to provide students with comprehensive knowledge, clear understanding of antimicrobial therapeutic agents and the medical and pharmaceutical aspects of non- antibiotic antimicrobial agents. This is in addition to the principles of microbial control and appropriate methods of sterilizing pharmaceutical products. The aim of this module is to ensure that students have the necessary knowledge & skills related to the principles of chemotherapy of microbial diseases, neoplastic diseases and parasitic infestations with emphasis on the properties of drugs and the patient factors that influence the therapeutic events. A part of the course is devoted to endocrine disorders, and drugs used in their treatments. The course also introduces aspects of adverse drug reactions, their types, mechanisms and hazards, as well as drug-drug interactions and their consequences, and altered drug responsiveness in special populations.

PPCP07I01: Community Pharmacy
This course will be tailored to build and develop the skills and knowledge of students to be prepared for working within the community pharmacy sector.
The aim of this module is to increase the clinical knowledge about oncotherapy & malignant complications, as well as bacterial infections (upper and lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastro-intestinal infections) to help the student to be an effective member of the health team strategy. It promotes the student's ability to identify problems and to reach logical decisions taking into account the patient's history of medications as well as patient education about the nature of their diseases, possible complications, drug administration, precaution and importance of compliance. For a specific disease state, the student should recognize possible drug interactions, managing and monitoring adverse drug reactions.
The aim of this module is to ensure that the students have the necessary understanding of data analysis, descriptive statistics, elementary probability theory, sampling methods, statistical inference, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression, analysis of variance along with applying this knowledge in bioassays and clinical settings/problems.
The aim of this module is to set-up the concept of toxicology with relation to defining its general rules, measurement, types of toxic agents; environmental pollutants, drugs; house-hold stuff; heavy metals, etc. Antidotes and measures/regulations to minimize toxicity will be likewise driven. Identification and managements of toxic agents will be also studied. Also, an overview will be provided on teratology and common drugs posing such a risk during pregnancy. By the time the student takes this course, he/she have already finished all basic and clinical pharmacology modules and is ready to study and understand how substances may behave on a toxic level. After finishing this course, the student should be able to realize and conduct the duties of toxicologists as well as the application of toxicology disciplines.

The aim of this Module is to provide students with the fundamental aspects of biotechnology and its importance to humankind in a concise and lucid explanation of this newly founded science. This course explores the fundamental issues of fermentation, Microbial growth processes, bioconversion processes, biodegradation and bioremediation. Lectures will also underline the recent advances techniques in applied genetic engineering, gene therapy and biotechnological products with emphasis on pharmaceutical production of drugs and their clinical application.
PPCP09H01: Professional Practice Externship
The aim of this module is to educate and train the students about applying professional pharmacy practice concepts in hospitals through conducting patients’ bedside rounds in different medical wards and in the pharmacy department. The other major aim is to assist the students to gain clinical experiences in applying the theoretical concepts of clinical pharmacy services through collecting patients’ histories, assessment of laboratory test results, applying SOAP format and designing a pharmaceutical care plan for real hospital cases

PPCP11H01: Pharmacy Practice
The aim of this module is to promote the standards of professionalism in pharmacy practice and to educate students about various aspects of patient-centered pharmaceutical care including performing different pharmacy practice-related calculations, physical examination and diagnostic procedures, drug administration techniques, adherence and compliance issues, managing adverse drug reactions and allergies, clinical drug monitoring, patient counseling, pain management and immunizations.

The aim of this module is to get the students acquainted with induced human body changes in response to sudden/ emergent health disorders like chock, trauma & poisoning. Students will also learn necessary general first aid procedures of providing quick, effective & professional life saving premedical aid.

PPCP14H01: Clinical Pharmacokinetics
The aims of this module are to enable the students to understand the kinetics of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination. Different pharmacokinetic models of different drugs (antibiotics, cardiovascular medications, antiepileptic, chemotherapy and immunosuppressant) will be discussed. This course prepares the students to utilize the pharmacokinetic parameters to individualize patient therapy more rationally. Specialized software applications will be employed to learn scientific means to assess doses, their time intervals and frequency via various routes of administration.

After the completion of this course the student will be able to:

- Apply efficiently the basic theoretical background essential for identifying molecules for development process and for design of controlled and targeted drug and protein delivery systems.
- Design and implement the preformulation studies needed for medicines development.

- Understand and describe how bio/chemo informatics tools can be used in drug delivery and targeting research.
- Study the basics of computer assisted dosage form design as a new approach in drug delivery.
- Calculate the properties (descriptors) of potential drugs, and correlate these to target protein interactions through bio/chemo-informatical modeling.

The aim(s) of this module are to:
1- Make the students apply their previously gained information on pharmacognosy and phytochemistry courses to assist in counselling the patients.
2- Help the pharmacy students understanding the importance of the herbal products and their secondary metabolites in treatment of different ailments.
3- Identify the main medicinal uses of different herbs and their side effects as well.
The aim of this module is to deliver basic knowledge to the students on Pharmacovigilance and risk benefit balance of marketed products based on their knowledge of the pharmacological background of the drugs. Also students are educated about strategies for the best therapeutic outcomes with minimum risks. Applying the aforementioned knowledge, the students should know the updated advancements in this new science to be skilled enough to cope with the new era of medicines control.
PRGP01H01: Research Project
The main aim is to guide the student about the methods & criteria in writing scientific clinical research. This is a continuation of the first research project. The student starts to perform the experimental part of his project by establishing the methods, collecting data, presenting his work as tables & figures, performing statistical analysis, writing a final report with a discussion and a conclusion. The course ends up by presenting a written report as well as a power point presentation
PPIP08H01: Industrial Pharmacy-1
This course complements "Industrial Pharmacy-I. PPIP14H01: Quality Control & Quality Assurance of Pharmaceuticals
This is fundamental, applicable course for pharmacy students. The course integrates principles of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) with emphasis on the physicochemical, microbiological and biopharmaceutical criteria used in evaluation of dosage forms. Essentially, students study pharmaceutical process validation, GMP guidelines on pharmaceutical manufacturing viz, GMP of starting materials, sterile products, biological products, herbal pharmaceuticals, GMP of drug discovery and clinical trials as well as GMP guidelines on auditing and self-inspection. Moreover, this course enables students to distinguish the importance of Quality Control (QC) process, to develop an analytical method, interpret and assess statistical data.

This is more applicable pharmaceutical drug design course for fourth year pharmacy students. The course is designed so that students gain understanding on the concept of the drug discovery process, sources of lead compounds, drug-receptor interactions, and design of agonists, antagonist, and partial agonist, method of lead optimization as well as steric features of drugs. Essentially students will thoroughly study pro drug approach (drug latenation), quantitative structure- activity relationship (QSAR) and molecular modeling (computer aided drug design CADD)
The aim of the course is to give an overview of nanotechnology and its application in biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical research and drug delivery. This course addresses the basic principle of nanotechnology, novel nanomaterials and their use as drug delivery nano-carriers with interesting clinical applications. This course focuses on drug delivery frameworks; novel nanomaterials that are suitable as “smart” drug delivery systems; the synthesis, chemical properties and characterization techniques of different categories of nanostructures such as: nanoparticles, polymers, carbon nanoubes (CNT), nanfibres, fullerenes; colloids; dendrimers and other macromolecules; metallic and inorganic nanotubes, nanoporous materials; and nanocomposites. For each category examples of applications would be given to demonstrate the applicability of the properties discussed

This course complements Neuroscience-I. It discusses how the brain develops; especially clear insights have emerged in recent years by virtue of the genetic revolution.
