GPRS Competition


Within Egypt vision 2030 for “Sustainable Development” and the “Culture of Sustainability” concepts, this competition aims at designing a Green Worship House that complies with all sustainable criteria explained in the Green Pyramid rating systems. This comes as a pilot initiative for expanding the application of the Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS) in other building types and scales. Hence, applicants are required to investigate the assessment criteria stated by the Green Pyramids rating system and apply it in their designs.

 
The Philosophy of the Competition

The building should be symbolic and a basic need of life which allows the largest number of community members using it daily and continuously. This shall eventually promote the culture of sustainability and green buildings and allows different levels of alternatives to design. Hence, the competition requires designing a worship house according to the rules mandated by the “Green Pyramid” rating system. This can be a mosque, church, or temple; it may range from a Zawya, mosque or an Islamic centre, church or cathedral. This diversity is suitable for various design proposals and familiarizes the public with the concept of green buildings. Accordingly, the proposed project should take into account all the standards of “Green Pyramid” during its life cycle process including design, construction, control, and management. This covers site selection, energy, water, materials, thermal comfort … etc., in addition to innovation and creativity which are main standards for evaluating participated projects.

About HBRC

Housing & Building National Research Center, HBRC, is a governmental institute subordinate to the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities which started in 1954 by 12 employees. HBRC now has more than 1100 employees, 300 of which are M.Sc., and/or PhD holders.
HBRC is the sole entity nationwide responsible for issuing the Egyptian Codes (30) as well as technical specifications (21), in addition to providing periodical training for these codes and specifications. Training also extends to a variety of engineering subjects and it serves both public and private sectors.

HBRC is involved in several national scientific research plans leading to academic degrees. One of the main activities of HBRC is serving the community through the assessment of mal-functioning structures nationwide, as well as technically refereeing disputes between different parties. Moreover, HBRC is taking a substantial role in the quality control and construction supervision of the national projects. 

About FECFSC

Farouk ElBaz Centre for Sustainability and Future Studies as a Research and Development (R&D) Centre has emerged as an important part of the BUE’s efforts to address future sustainability in terms of environmental, economic, and social challenges through the engagement of students, academic staff and researchers. The CSFS is envisioned to propose a suite of creative comprehensive solutions that tackle the future from a sustainable point of view. This is achieved through training and education, research, seminars, workshops, conferences, consultancy and publications. 

About Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS)

In 2010, the Housing and Building National Research Center in conjunction with The Egyptian Green Building Council has developed Egypt’s national rating system known as the Green Pyramids. It has recently been officially launched in the Egyptian context. It represents the contextual adaptation of several international rating systems. It aims at assessing sustainable building performance based on sustainability of site selection, water and energy efficiency, materials selection and construction system, indoor environmental quality, innovation and design and recycling of solid waste. Five certification levels are granted according to the total scoring points of buildings and how much they satisfied all sustainable requirements. These are arranged from the least to the highest level as follows; Certified, Bronze, Silver, Golden and Platinum Certification level.

What is the purpose of this competition?

Farouk ElBaz Centre for Sustainability and Future Studies (FECSFS) at the British University in Egypt (BUE) is always keen at taking precedent role at the research community to promote sustainability in various means according to the national vision of Egypt 2030. Hence, this competition acts as a pilot project to test the application of the Green Pyramids Rating system as a step for its promotion nationally. This presents a mutual benefit for both practitioners and researchers to be able to pinpoint potentials and challenges.

What is the submission language?

The report is required to be submitted in English.

Who can participate?

This call is open for a wide variety of participants; individuals and groups, professionals, academics and students.

Participants can be of various educational backgrounds.

What is the type of the project?

It is a new construction for a worship house that follows the green design approach.

What is the scale of the project?

The scale of the presented work can range from small to larger scale. The assessment criteria put more weight on the sustainable logic of design and compliance with the Green Pyramids Rating systems criteria.

What are the assessment criteria?

The assessment criteria are not based on the architectural design but depend on the level of understanding of sustainable criteria. Hence, the assessment is divided into three main components;

r 40%- Report expressing design team’s self-evaluation and checklist compliance with the Green Pyramids Rating systems criteria

r 30%- Design (Plans, Elevations and Sections).

r 20% - Concept explaining the social reality behind the design approach

r 10%- Presentation- 7 minutes of video or power point show
