English Department
English is the international language of technology, science, diplomacy, and business. It is a dynamic, growing language. Graduates with fluent academic, professional and social English language skills will be best placed to secure rewarding careers and to make outstanding contributions in their chosen field
Ethos
We take a team approach to learning English: supportive, experienced and well-qualified staff work with determined, enthusiastic and conscientious students.
Structure
While proficiency in English is not a condition of admission to BUE, students sit for a placement test to determine their English language ability. They will be placed in one of the following five English levels on the Preparatory Year Programme:
- Pre-Intermediate
- Intermediate
- Upper Intermediate
- Advanced*
- Advanced Writing*
(*compulsory modules)
Students will follow the sequence of modules to progress through the levels. Each module must be successfully completed before moving to the next level.
The University also offers a Reinforcement English Programme for those students whose English language is not yet ready for them to enter the Preparatory Year. This is a one year programme which allows students to study fifteen hours a week to enable them to develop their English language skills. Students will progress to the Preparatory Year upon passing the Reinforcement assessment.
Learning Approach
The BUE takes a student-centred approach to learning. We offer a mixture of classes and small tutorial sessions to ensure consistent learning, consolidation and progress. Teachers guide students towards a range of objectives aimed at building formal academic, professional and social ability in the English Language. We use:
- Reading tasks
- Formal written assignments
- Listening tasks
- Speaking tasks
Continuous assessment creates an environment in which students can set targets for their learning, as well as giving themselves specific and frequent goals to develop, measure and consolidate their progress. Teaching staff benefit from regular student feedback to help them monitor and enhance the effectiveness of the programme.
Study and Communication Skills
Studying at BUE will challenge all our students. As well as the basic reading, writing, speaking, listening, and comprehension skills, the English programme integrates study and communication skills to support learners across the curriculum. Key features are:
- Organisation and time management
- Revision and examination techniques
- Research skills
- Presentation skills
Resources
BUE’s IT facilities are state-of-the-art. We boast a responsive library service, a language laboratory and well-equipped computer suites. All students have access to a range of the latest Computer-Assisted Language Learning Programmes which allow students to work independently on developing and practising their English Language skills. All lecture theatres and most classrooms have the latest IT systems to support our dynamic learning process.
